Less last-minute. More family time. Your school year, a little clearer.

A little clarity for family life

School terms and holiday dates explained

A term date tells you the span of a term. A holiday date tells you when a published break falls within or between those terms.

Three terms. Sometimes six teaching blocks.

Calendars may show autumn, spring and summer terms, or split them into six periods around half-term breaks. A whole term span can include a mid-term holiday; do not count it as continuous pupil attendance.

Different places, different patterns.

England and Wales commonly use half-term breaks. Scottish calendars use October and February breaks and local September or May holidays. Northern Ireland has a national holiday calendar with school-specific variation.

The first day back needs its own check.

Term-opening dates, INSET days and pupil return dates can differ. We display an attendance return only where the source explicitly supplies it.
